THE ANGELS' MESSAGE

Introduction

Angels announced Jesus' birth to the shepherds in the fields. This lesson looks at the happy message of those celestial heralds, reported in Luke 2:8-14.

Body

I. Do not be afraid!

   A. Fear is expected in the presence of the unknown, especially when sinful man confronts Almighty God.

   B. Fear often hinders what is good.

        1. Fear of failure (the one-talent man).

        2. Fear of others' ideas and reactions.

        3. Fear of where something leads. If the "something" is clearly true, this fear shows unbelief, not faith, for God will surely not "lead" us anywhere that is not good!

   C. Fear generates suspicion, mistrust and anxiety. Evil men have sometimes used fear to divide and destroy God's people.

II. The news is good!

   A. God's gospel is a happy announcement; it is not a dreary word. The gospel of Christ is an announcement, of God's saving work in Jesus Christ. It is not simply more laws, or a different law. Law can only condemn in the end; the gospel brings joy! See John 3:16-19.

   B. Great joy, not fear, is the result.

        1. Acts 8:8.

        2. Acts 8:39.

        3. Acts 16:34.

   C. It is for all (the) people. Is your church a true cross-section of your community?

        1. Not just the ruling class.

        2. Not just those of noble birth.

        3. Not just the wealthy or influential.

        4. Not just those of education or prestige.

        5. Not just the middle-class and whites.

III. This is the good news: You have a Savior!

   A. He is born in Bethlehem, the city of David.

        1. As Micah had predicted long before.

        2. "David" suggests His kingly might.

   B. The one born is your Savior.

        1. Not another Moses, to whom you go for law and condemnation.

        2. Not another David, to whom you go for war and conquest.

        3. Not another Solomon, to whom you go for wisdom and advice.

        4. He is a Savior, to whom you go for mercy, forgiveness, grace and peace with God.

   C. He is Christ, the Lord!

        1. Do you know Him as your Savior and Lord?

        2. He waits to know you -- and longs to save.

Conclusion

Men and women still need to hear the angels' song. Its beautiful message is fresh and joyful -- it will bring cheer and peace. Accept it in your own heart and life today!
